Évolène village

Évolène

Formed in the gentle musicality of water, the name Evolène comes from the patois "éwu Lànä" which means easy water. Indeed, the spring "éwu Lénä" which crosses the village allows to have water in abundance, never cold, always fresh, maintained naturally at 10 °C all year long!
The village has managed to keep its traditional values and customs which immerse us in a unique atmosphere, while being open to modernity. This is certainly why Evolène was awarded the title of most beautiful village in French-speaking Switzerland in the autumn of 2012 by the readers of the Illustré.

Architecture and built heritage
Evolène has managed to preserve a rich and varied built heritage, ranging from raccards to attics and including barns and barn-securies. The parish church sits in the middle of the village, also benefiting from its past and the additions of successive parts. Recognised as an ISOS site (Federal Inventory of nationally important built sites to be protected in Switzerland), these vestiges of a past life are nevertheless very much alive and still harbour local traditions and cultures such as the Evolène carnival and the Midsummer Festival or the daily use of the patois by the inhabitants.

Hiking and summer activities
Numerous hikes start from Evolène, in the direction of the lower Val d'Hérens with the villages of Hérémence, St-Martin or Eison and the mayens of Volovron. Other paths will take you towards Chemeuille and the Arbey, Arolla or Les Haudères mountain pastures, and some will guide you towards the villages of Les Rocs. Climbing, via ferrata, scooters or mountain biking are also popular activities in the region.

Winter activities
In winter, Evolène has privileged access to the Evolène-Les Haudères cross-country ski trail as well as numerous snowshoe trail departures, in a perfectly preserved natural and magical setting.
