Evolène's built heritage is ISOS-recognised

05 / 02 / 2021

In the Evolène region, the built heritage is of particular importance and has therefore been recognised by ISOS (Federal Inventory of Built Sites of National Importance for Protection in Switzerland). In this document, you will learn more about the history of the rich built heritage of the Evolène region.

The first mentions of the site date back to 1250, Ewelina, and 1255, Eweleina. This name, derived from the patois, means "where the water is easy". The occupation of the site, which is located on a glaciation platform at the foot of the alluvial cone of a scree overhanging the Borgne, may date back to prehistoric times.
