European Heritage Day

For this year's European Heritage Day, the thousand-year-old Sion-Collon-Valpelline-Aoste passage has been chosen to be highlighted in the commune of Evolène.

This historic route, already known in Neolithic times, was used to transport goods and livestock to the Val d'Aoste fair during the Middle Ages and modern times. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that the mule track, attested since Roman times and linking Sion to Evolène, was replaced by a carriage road. The last section between Les Haudères and Arolla was not completed until 1960. Its remains, including chapels, will be visited.

Program:

The day begins at 1:30pm with a talk at the Hôtel des Haudères, on the Place de la Poste.

You will then set off on the old mule trail towards Arolla, in the company of two pack mules.
